Membership Information

Information on how to join the Japanese Academy of Budo is detailed below. If you have any questions, please contact the Academy office.

1. Enrolment Information and Approval

  • Regular members must be budo researchers. Student membership excludes graduate students.
  • There must be a recommendation from a member of the Academy.
  • After application, approval of the Board of Directors must be obtained.

2. Application Procedures

  • Complete the designated “Japanese Academy of Budo Enrolment Application Form” and send to the Japanese Academy of Budo Office.
  • Those approved by the Board of Directors will be sent a payment form, so please transfer the enrolment fee and annual membership fee.
  • Membership will begin when the transfer of the annual membership fee can be confirmed.
  • Enrolment fee is 3,000 yen. Annual membership fees are as follows: Regular member – 8,000 yen; Graduate student member – 7,000 yen. (For student members, enrolment fee is 1,000 yen and annual membership fee is 1,000 yen.)

3. Other Matters

  • If the annual membership fee is unpaid for two consecutive years after joining, membership will be revoked in accordance with the Academy Constitution.
  • Please use your home address as the contact address, not your workplace. If there are any changes to your home address, workplace, or phone number, please promptly notify the office by postcard.
  • If resigning from the Academy, please pay the annual membership fee for the current year and notify the Academy office by postcard.

Who are the members of the Japanese Academy of Budo?

Among the regular members of the society are university researchers in the fields of humanities and natural sciences, high school teachers, budo instructors, and budo enthusiasts. There is a wide range of members, and due to the nature of budo, the age range is from those from their 20s to their 80s. Additionally, there is a system for student membership (excluding graduate students) that allows students to join as well.

What kind of information can be obtained from the Academy?

Each member is sent a copy of the Japanese Academy of Budo’s “Research Journal of Budo”. Also, a conference is held once a year with presentations on judo, kendo, karatedo, kyudo, sumo, and naginata. The contents of presentations are broken down into three categories: human sciences, natural sciences, and budo instruction. Furthermore, at the conference there is a symposium and research meetings from which participants can get information related to budo. In addition, various types of information, such as newsletters, are provided. In 2003, a new Specialist Subcommittee on Budo Culture for the Disabled was established which made it possible to obtain information related to budo for people with disabilities.

How do you become a member of the Academy?

One requirement is that members must be budo researchers. There is no particular question about the level of research or current affiliation, but a recommendation from a member of the society is required. For more details, please refer to the “How to Join” section above.

Can non-members take part in the Japanese Academy of Budo Conference?

Participation in the conference as a temporary member is possible. Depending on the nature of the event, some conferences may also be open to the public. Please refer to the announcements for each conference. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the Academy office.

How to Apply

Guidelines

Both individuals and organisations can join the Japanese Academy of Budo as a supporting member.
Yearly fee: 1 unit = 20,000 yen per year. (*You may contribute more than 1 unit per year if desired.)

Applications to become a supporting member are accepted at any time, so please contact the Japanese Academy of Budo Office at budogaku@xj8.so-net.ne.jp.

Privileges

Supporting member privileges are listed below

  • You can participate in the Academy’s conference, research presentations, lectures, and social gatherings.
  • You will be sent journals, membership lists, and other publications.
  • You can receive discounts on advertisements placed in the journal and other publications published by the Academy.
  • Promotional activities (such as introducing supporting members) can be conducted on the homepage.

Introduction The headquarters of the Japanese Academy of Budo is currently located within the Nippon Budokan, with regional branches established in Tokyo, Saitama, Yamanashi, Tokai, Hokushinetsu, Kansai, Chugoku-Shikoku, and Kyushu. In addition, specialised subcommittees were first established for the following budo disciplines: judo, kendo, karatedo, kyudo, sumo, and naginata. Later, subcommittees for budo for the disabled and for Shorinji Kempo were added. Today, these eight specialised subcommittees are continuing to steadily conduct research activities, focusing on themes such as instruction methods for beginners and the integration of theory and practice.

Introduction The Kendojo Flooring Architectural Workshop company specialises in the installation of kendo dojo floors and research into this field. Even though it is often said that the floor is the soul of the kendo dojo, specialised companies with expertise in dojo flooring are extremely rare.
